A Case Study: Layla Dass The Female Detailer

In August this year, we had the pleasure of speaking with Layla Dass, The Female Detailer, to gain insight into how Spotless Water has helped her detailing processes and what it is like to be a female within the industry.

Tell me about your business…

My company is called ‘The Female Detailer‘. It is just me and I provide mobile detailing and valeting services. I am based in Birmingham mainly, but I cover all the West Midlands.

How often do you use Spotless Water and which stations do you use?

I fill up 2/3 times a day. I use a few filling stations including West Bromwich (my closest), Halesowen, Solihull, and Perry Barr. I fill up 2/3 times a day.

How central is Spotless Water to the services you provide?

I can’t live without Spotless Water. It’s completely different to tap water. It’s especially essential in the heat. Spotless Water gives me that piece of mind that it will leave a good finish. The finish is so different than tap water. The whole vehicle just looks shinier.

It’s so convenient for me to have a water tank and just fill it up rather than using the customer’s water. I always have somewhere to fill up. Many stations are local to me. I didn’t realise how many there was at the start. There are so many!

When did you first become aware of Spotless Water and what stood out about our company and the water?

When I first started detailing, I didn’t have a van. I worked from home and would clean my friends, families, and neighbour’s cars. Then I got my van, and I was using tap water, but this was a struggle. Then my window cleaner told me about Spotless Water and told me there was a filling station down the road.

The quality of the water stands out. When I sell my business to people, they question my prices and stuff like that, and I say well they pay for the good service and I pay for my water. Overall, the quality of the water makes a difference to the car. It leaves a shinier finish than any other water.

Also, you have great customer service. There’s always someone on the other end of the phone to help. My calls are always answered.

For me, I find it’s also helpful to have multiple stations near me because I am not limited. West Bromwich is closest to my house so I can quickly stop by. But then with other stations on my routes too it means I don’t have to go all the way back home to fill up. It works out really good for me and it’s very convenient.

How important is sustainability to you and your business?

It appeals to me that you are a sustainable business. I want to be as sustainable as possible. The more good things I hear about Spotless Water and sustainability then the less concerned I am about using you. Hearing about how things work is great, the sustainability side just makes me trust Spotless Water even more.

What would you say to another business considering using Spotless Water?

I would say that they can go there and fill up easily, like a petrol tank, and it takes only 5 minutes. You get deionised water, which doesn’t leave marks, and leaves a streak-free finish. I would like to emphasise that I am convinced that the reason why the cars turn out extra shiny is due to Spotless Water. The wheels always have such a great finish! Customers ask what I have put on the wheels to make them so shiny, but it really is just soap and Spotless Water.

Tell me about life as a female in the detailing industry? Have you found it easy or difficult? Have there been some positives and some negatives?

When I first started my business, I never thought about being a female in the industry, but as time went on there has been positives and negatives.

There was no hate at the beginning, as I was only cleaning cars of my friends, family, and neighbours.

But being a female in the industry has become a blessing for me as my business has grown, once people saw my face cleaning the vehicles. It is something you don’t often see, so people book me in often. There are so many male detailers in Birmingham and surrounding areas, if I was a man then I don’t think I could have done it.

There has been some hate, but I don’t let it get to me. Some men just don’t like to see women doing what they are doing, but times have changed now. It hasn’t been all negative though. I’ve had girls message me on social media saying they want to start a business and want training or advice, but aren’t confident about it. It’s a shame though because in this business you have to be confident. I tell them they must be confident.

Overall, at the beginning when I first set up my business, I never thought people cared that I was a female in the industry, but then I noticed I got bigger on social media when I posted myself in videos cleaning the cars. Many people, including men, say they feel safe, and comfortable with a woman being at their house cleaning their cars. They can trust me.

I really enjoy my job and couldn’t function without Spotless Water!
